Webster Hummingbird Feeder

We are very pleased to announce we now have in stock the authentic reproduction of the first feeder designed by man to feed hummingbirds, the Webster feeder. Originally designed in 1928 for his disabled wife to enjoy watching hummingbirds, Mr. Webster had the feeder made to his specifications by the chemistry and physics glass blowing lab at M.I.T.

The Webster’s maintained glorious estates near Cambridge and a summer retreat on a New Hampshire lake and had a large staff of gardeners and landscape architects to maintain several acres of flower gardens at each location. They let the general public stroll the grounds at no charge after church each Sunday for a few hours. As they had some of the largest flower gardens in all of New England, they also attracted large numbers of Ruby-throated hummingbirds each season. Their properties became known as the best locations in that region to observe hummingbirds.

Naturally, when the visitors saw the first hummingbird feeder, and how successful it was even surrounded by acres of nectar producing flowers, they wanted one for themselves. Mr. Webster had several hundred of these feeders created and sold them for $10.00 each (a lot of money back then!). When Mrs. Webster died in 1948, he created 500 more feeders and donated them to the Audubon Society in January of that year. National Geographic magazine featured pictures of the first hummingbird feeder being used in the February issue. The public clamored for the hummingbird feeders and the Audubon Society sold out of them within the month. They disappeared off the market until The Wild Bird Store has reintroduced them more than half a century later.

We have a very talented local glass blower, John Mims, making these authentic reproductions for us and the birds really enjoy using them. They cost $49.99 and you’ll not only enjoy watching the hummers use them repeatedly, but, you’ll also own a piece of American birding history!

Bird’s Choice Copper Hummingbird Feeders – Bird’s Choice, located in Chilton, Wisconsin, is another favorite manufacturer whose products we enjoy selling and using. They recently came out with three new models of hummingbird feeders that are well designed and constructed; do not leak, drip or spill; are UV stable; easy to use; and eye-catching to boot! Each model features tough acrylic clear nectar wells and bright red lids mounted into hand-crafted copper wire holders. Small food ports make these models woodpecker-proof and probably species-specific to hummingbirds.

  • Hummzinger Fancy - 12 ounce. Its surface is covered with deeply embossed flowers, making it one of the most attractive feeders available today.
  • Hummzinger Fancy Mini - 8 ounce version of the Hummzinger Fancy.
  • Hummzinger High View allows the hummers to perch above the feeder ports, conserving their energy and providing an even more spectacular look at these gemlike birds.
  • Hummzinger HighView Mini If I had to be limited to using only one hummingbird feeder, it was always the 12 ounce High View model. Now, Aspects has introduced the newest member of its family of Hummzinger hummer feeders – the 8 ounce High View model. It has all the attributes of the 12 ounce model but in a slightly more compact model. The raised perch enables hummers, even babies just out of the nest, to utilize the perch and thus conserve energy. The raised perch also provides us humans with the best possible viewing of the entire bird. Like all the other Hummzinger models, this feeder is leak, drip and spill-proof; can hang or be pole/dowel mounted; has a built-in ant moat; has three food ports; accepts the nectar guard tips (sold as an accessory) that keeps the feeder bee and wasp-proof; is constructed  of UV stable polycarbonate for extremely long life; built-in nectar gage on side of nectar bowl; allows rain to pass thru the feeder without diluting the nectar; and, like all Aspects products, is made in Rhode Island and comes with an unconditional lifetime guarantee! Now, I prefer my 8 ounce High View to all others!

The Hummzinger series is one of our favorite designs for hummingbird feeders. These feeders have all the features we wish for in an excellent feeder and none of the problems that many other feeders commonly experience. Manufactured by Aspects, the Hummzingers have a lifetime guarantee which the company gladly upholds. In fact, the feeders are so good that the company only receives a few guarantee inquiries per year.

Jon’s Hummingbird Feeders

Our proprietary glass hummingbird feeders have been popular since we introduced them a couple of years ago. After searching far and wide for new materials, I discovered a unique source of colored bottles that I transform into hummingbird feeders. Nowhere else in United States are these feeders available! The glass bottles are made in Spain from 99% recycled Spanish glass. I create copper wire holders and add tube and stoppers to make these beautiful, yet practical and functional, feeders. The Amphora bottles (have two handles and a conical bottom) are the earliest known vessel shape created by the ancient Sumerians, Greeks, and Egyptians for transporting liquids and other foodstuffs. Unlike most tube and stopper type feeders, these feeders do not drip! Available in a variety of sizes and colors.

Holland Hill Hummingbird Feeders are handmade in Oklahoma. They make use of test tubes and twisted copper wire formed into hummingbird feeders that quickly become some of the most used and preferred feeders for hummers. We field tested them for the past two months and loved watching the hummers and verdins coming onto our backyard deck to feed. We stock three hanging models and two window models. One of Holland Hill’s most unusual offerings is the Hummingbird Wand. Hang it out with your other feeders and when you want to use it, hand-hold it out in the same area. Within minutes, a hummer will land on it, feed and get up close and personal with you. We also carry replacement tubes and stoppers, extra perches, and a tube caddy so that you can prepare extra tubes and store them in your refrigerator for future use.

Best 1 Hummingbird Feeders

Comes in two sizes of glass bottles - an 8 ounce (pint) bottle and a 32oz (quart) bottle. Both bottles screw into the UV-stable styrene base, which has six food ports and a continuous perch to save energy for the birds. The base comes apart quickly and easily for cleaning and refilling. This sturdy and durable feeder has been a staple in our hummingbird station for nearly a decade and is still in use today. Wild Bird Store Hummingbird Nectar

This clear nectar simulates the natural nectar of flowers better than any other nectar available. This nectar, like natural nectar in flowers, is a complex sugar made of sucrose and dextrose. This complex nectar changes to glucose when ingested by the bird and, as glucose, is absorbed 100% and gives the birds an equal return on their energy expended. Lesser nectars and homemade solutions only deliver about 60% of the energy required by hummingbirds. Use a ratio of 5 parts hot water to 1 part nectar mix for optimum results. Our longtime customers are extremely loyal to this nectar as it far surpasses all other nectars. The birds loyalty to this nectar will soon become evident to you, too.
