Tree Nut Mix
We have added a new food product to our inventory. It is a blend of tree nuts with pistachios, almonds, and walnuts in roughly equal amounts. We’re told there may be times when additional nuts may be added to the mix, particularly pecans, cashews, Brazils and macadamia nuts. This mix of nuts is approved for human consumption but the plant that processes them screens them for size and the ones that are smaller than full size are what we are now able to offer to our bird feeding friends.

Nyjer
The seed of choice for the goldfinch family members, Nyjer is one of the more expensive seeds for wild birds due to the fact that it is grown in countries like Ethiopia, China, India, Burma, and Nepal. It is usually a wild seed which is hand harvested. Additionally, it needs to be shipped to the US market from points halfway around the globe and, lastly, has to be sterilized to enter the US - as it is considered a pest plant in the Americas. But it still is the most effective for attracting goldfinches and Pine Siskins. Goldfinches and Siskins prefer fresh nyjer. They lose interest in old nyjer and stop coming by for a snack.. Our nyjer reaches our store within one week of its arrival in the USA. Keep your finches happy and feed fresh thistle!

Hemp Seed
This seed was the basic seed in most bird mixes until the 1930's, when prohibition prevented the domestic growing of this seed. Hartz Mountain used it extensively in its bird seed mixes while it was a domestically grown product. Until recently, and like the Nyjer Thistle, it was grown in distant countries and was also an expensive seed for the same reasons. Now, however, Canadian farmers have recently begun growing this popular seed and the prices are beginning to come down. Use Hemp either by itself in a feeder or mix it into other blends for added variety. Cardinals and grosbeaks relish this seed. Hemp is a very nutritious food for birds as it is high in fat, and the oil from the seed is rich in protein, carbohydrates and other trace elements which high energy wild birds need. Sold by the pound only. Buy as many pounds as you like.

Scratch Mix
Scratch Mix is an excellent ground feeding mix for quail and doves. Chicken farmers use it as a staple for their birds. It is an all grain, no seed mix, made of cracked corn, wheat berries, red and/or white milo (sorghum). Scatter a small amount in a wide area and change the feeding location daily. This prevents the buildup of uneaten grains and any mold that may develop. Leaving no grains on the ground at night prevents rodents from making themselves at home. It is not meant for feeders as there are no real seed in Scratch Mix and all the grains will be tossed aside by perching seed-eating birds to land on the ground.
- 1 Pound Scratch Mix - $ .75
- 25 Pounds Scratch Mix - $11.99
- 50 Pounds Scratch Mix - $18.99
